Hard Times? - It's a Gas!

I hope this article, will help you solve your gas problem! :)
I mean...... BioGas, and Wood Stove emissions gas, of course! What did you think I meant?! ;-)
My light-hearted apology, for the inference :). I have always found, dealing with hard times needs a laugh, instead of a scream!

My Solution for Hard Times:

We need to do what we can. We need to use what common sense we can. We need to be as smart as we can. We need to use what resources we have. We need to find a solution!
Did you notice, I did not say, 'We need to find a solution if we can?'. That is because there is always a solution!
Hard times are here, and unfortunately, there are more to come.
We have been told there is a propane shortage.
Oops! Sorry! Another one of those hard times laughs, just slipped out!
Shortage? Remember your history? Just before the SHTF (Stuff Hits The Fan), 'they' start hollering 'Shortage', and then comes more regulation!
For those who live in rural areas, this propane 'shortage', will be a real problem!
If that isn't bad enough, now 80% of wood burning stoves, cannot be used, because of their emissions!
More regulation! Country folk are in deep do-do!
That is a good thing though, because having deep do-do will make BioGas for you!
I am sure you are familiar with the saying, 'If you are given Lemons, make Lemonade!'. Well, how about a new SHTF saying? 'When in deep do-do, make BioGas!'. What do you think? Too dumb? :)
You know what I say about all the recent 'shortage' and banning that creates more hard times for us?

I say .............. Hard Times? - It's a Gas!

The gas I mean is BioGas (Methane), and Wood Gas!
There are solutions, to the new SHTF obstacles we face. The propane 'shortage', and wood smoke ban, are simply obstacles that have solutions!
As usual, I won't tell you what to do, and I won't do your research or work for you. What I will do, is make suggestions, and give you the information, you need, to use the resources, you have available.
If you have read my other articles, then you know what I am about to say. :)
Yep! You guessed it! You need to add some material, to your SHTF Survival Library! (See my other article SHTF-Poor Man's Survival Library, to learn how to create one.)
You will need to add the subjects of, 'BioGas/Methane Digester', and 'Rocket Stove/Mass Heater' to your SHTF Survival Library!
You need to find the necessary files, then download like the Stuff is about to Hit The Fan, because it is! (Actually, the SHTF has already begun, so get to it!)
After you get all your new files downloaded, you will then have in your possession, the knowledge, to solve your gas problems! Sorry! Another giggle, just slipped out! :).
Seriously though..........you need the free PDF's!
These are easy to obtain, by using a search engine, then type in, 'biogas methane plan toilet link greenhouse walipini ferrocement diagram how to diy make homemade build pdf'
This will give you all that is needed, to not only build your own BioGas Digester, to use, in place of propane, but will give you plans for an underground greenhouse. In the greenhouse, is where your BioGas Digester should be, to mitigated a slow-down in gas production, due to our new, frigid winter norm!
You can also download free PDF's, giving detailed information, on how to make a BioGas Digester, from chicken wire and cement. Use those PDF's with the ferrocement PDF's, to guide you through the process!

To get the other free PDF's you need, the same is true of the Rocket Mass Heater. Go to your search engine, and type in 'rocket mass heater cook stove plan diagram how to diy make homemade build pdf'
A good, free Rocket/Mass Heater Stove PDF, mini manual, will give all the statistics, necessary, for the Rocket Mass Heater emissions. In a nutshell, Rocket Mass Heaters, are the answer, for future cooking and heating needs, as there is no wood smoke emitted! The built-in smoke converter uses all the wood smoke! There is even no smoke to smell, coming from the chimney! Exhaust is mostly hydrogen!
If you get these mini-manuals, put them in your SHTF Survival Library, they will speak for themselves. They will give you step-by-step instructions, diagrams, and material lists with many of the items needed being, what I call useful junk! (See my other article on 'SHTF-Useful Junk or Just Crap?')
Yes, hard times are here! However, instead of letting these hard times, make us want to scream, let's have the last laugh!

I hope this helps you, and those you love!

Keeping the Home Fires Burning

The intent of this article, is to give some additional fire starting, and wood ideas, to those who would like to use wood, as an alternative means of cooking and heating.
Many have given up, on the idea of using wood, as a source of cooking, and heating because of recent regulations and bans on wood smoke.
Many wood stoves can be seen, in real estate pictures, nowadays. The stove is one of the 'appliances' that goes with the house.
Where most people see a charming item, all I see is a piece of pretty junk that if used, will bring on a hefty fine now! It is no wonder the sellers want to get rid of the charming stove!
Not many can afford to buy new wood stoves that meet all regulations. However, you don't have to give up on the idea of using wood to cook and heat with!
The answer is to build your own stove, which will fall well within the new wood stove regulations!
I covered Rocket Stove/Mass Heaters, in the article entitled 'Hard Times - It's a Gas!'. (Please see that article, if you are interested in building your own, and using that method to cook and heat your home.)
If you choose to cook and heat, using the Rocket Stove/Mass Heater method, here are some suggestions, which may be helpful.
All cooking and heating begins with starting a fire. I used wood heat for over thirty years. I cooked our meals, canned, and made bread and pies, with a wood cook stove. I loved it!
However, that is a lot of fires to start! I learned a few tricks, over the years. Here are are a couple of those tricks, to start a fire, you may be interested in:
Fire starters are expensive to buy! I prefer to reallocate the money, that would be spent on fire starters, to other stockup areas! You can make your own fire starters!
If you have a clothes dryer, save all you dryer lint. Pour about 1/2 teaspoon of mineral oil, in the bottom of each egg space of a styrofoam egg carton.
Take a small bit of dryer lint, and roll it roughly around in your palms, sort of like you are making a meatball. Then put the dryer lint ball, in the egg carton. Fill the egg carton with lint balls, then let them set overnight.
Take the saturated lint balls out the next day, and store in a metal coffee can, with the lid on it.
These lint fire starters work really well!
You can use the same method, with ripped up strips of newspaper.
Another idea, which you may find useful, is how to have a constant supply of wood that is as easy to work up, as it gets!
Hardwood, does burn longer, but softwood burns well too. What's more, you can have your own, renewable wood source, even if you don't already have acres and acres of trees! You will need some space though.
Siberian Elm, is a soft wood, that grows very fast! It will shoot up about six feet, every year! It is also cheap to plant!
If you buy cord wood, instead of spending several hundred dollars, for several cords of wood, each year, instead, spent just one hundred a year, for three years, on Siberian Elm saplings!
Plant one hundred Siberian Elm saplings each year, for three years. What you will have, at the end of three years, is an endless supply of renewable wood source to burn! Plus, after three years, your wood cost is virtually nothing!
In three years, the first year planting, will be around twenty feet tall, and the widest trunk measurement will be about six inches in diameter! When these are cut down, new side shoots sprout up, and in another three years.....more firewood!
Move to the next row, for next year's wood, then return to that first row in three years! Easy wood lot management!
These trees grow like weeds, and they are hard to kill out! Save one tree, to be the seed tree.
Tree rows start to look exhausted, after about six years. Just plant some seeds firmly between the older trees, on year five, and new trees will take off again!
Sidebar: The older, original side shoots make pretty good darts for pistol crossbows, and crossbow arrows! :). Waste not want not! :). Look out chickens! The arrows and darts need some of your tail feathers! :)
If drought is a problem, or you simply have a lazy streak, like me (not!)......plant the original trees, on a slight slope. Just uphill, from the line of trees, dig a trench, about three feet deep.
Line the trench with common sheet plastic, leaving the top rim of the plastic, only about one and a half feet high. Throw a bunch of bigger rocks in, then throw in some old wood logs, wood chunks, wood pieces, and even stump roots work fine too.
The trench should now be about two feet filled. Now throw dirt back in, and pack down well.
This is called a Swale. It creates underground water storage, for the trees, by catching run off. The rotting wood acts like a sponge, to hold water, and the trees thrive!
Swales are used in any permaculture, long-term survival, self-sustaining plan.
Just think of what big, juicy fruit, you'll have, if you use Swales, in the orchard! That would be another article though! :)

Anyway............I hope this article helps you and those you love!

Sincerely,

Anonymous Ole Prepper
